At the start of the new millennium the Dalai Lama issued eighteen rules of living. Ten of those rules have been explained below in order to make the life of the reader better.
Here Are 10 Teachings From Dalai Lama For A Good And Honorable Life :
1. Take into account that great love and great achievements involve great risk.
“A ship is safe in harbor, but that’s not what ships are for.” ― William G.T. Shedd. Nothing great can ever happen without taking a risk. This world was not changed by the people who did not challenge their limits but by those whose who made the impossible seem possible. Those who believe in the power of their dreams must take risks in order to make them a reality because no one else is going to do it for them.
Be brave, Take risks, Follow your heart and one day you will reach where you actually belong.
And about love, there can be nothing riskier than being in true love, the ultimate risk of life.
2. When you lose, don’t lose the lesson.
There will be times in your life when you will fail, everybody fails, it is how you succeed. You learn from your mistakes and you better yourself. You never lose, you win or you learn. When people lose, sometimes they are in pain and agony. These losses lead to change, you are never the same as you were before. It is your choice to be bitter or better.
Every failure is a teacher and every lesson that you learn from it is nature’s way of helping you. There is pure wisdom out there but you should be willing to listen.
3. Remember that not getting what you want is sometimes a wonderful stroke of luck.
The universe works in mysterious ways, so one should not be disheartened by not getting what one wants. In the end by the spirit of the universe, you always get what you need but not what you want. It is about winning the war not the battles.
And sometimes not taking a road you wanted may open new and better doorways to what you ultimately wanted to achieve.
4. Don’t let a little dispute injure a great friendship.
We have all fight with our friends and sometimes over very silly things. One must not let a single dispute damage a friendship worth dying for. “ Remember that the most valuable antiques are dear old friends” – H. Jackson Brown, Jr.
There is no treasure greater than having a loving and caring friend who is always there for you.
And remember Friends are the siblings God never gave us – Mencius.
5. When you realize you have made a mistake, take immediate steps to correct it.
The true honor of life lies in acceptance of one’s shortcomings. One must take full responsibility for one’s actions. And once you realize you have made a mistake don’t let ego or pride come into your way. Just make amends, your character is formed by how you handle your mistakes and how gracefully you learn from them.
Never let time pass if you know you can make things right today, Yesterday is gone and Tomorrow is yet to arrive the only thing that is for certain is Today, the present moment is where life actually exists, never forget that.
6. Spend some time alone every day.
There is a whole universe inside us and one must explore it. Sit alone for at least fifteen minutes a day, preferably in the morning.
Meditate, do yoga or some other recreational activity that takes you one step closer to the higher consciousness inside you. If that’s too much just sit alone and do long and slow breathing.Trust me it will make your day better. The purest form of joy in life is inner peace and spending some time alone every day is a step towards it.
7. Open your arms to change, but don’t let go of your values.
In this ever-changing world, some things should always be constant, your principles and values.
The one’s who don’t change with time, break but this doesn’t mean you have to change your values as well. “In matters of style, swim with the current , in matter of principle stand like a rock.”: Thomas Jefferson. Welcome, change with one hand and in the other hold on to your values.
8. Share your knowledge. It’s a way to achieve immortality
Knowledge never dies, it is passed on. The only way one can make a mark in history is by sharing knowledge.
One can learn only so much in one lifetime, so the sum of all the experiences must be shared. Millions of books have been written and millions more will be for just one purpose, share knowledge.
“To help, to continually help and share, that is the sum of all knowledge, that is the meaning of art.” : Elenora Duse
9. Once a year, go someplace you’ve never been before.
To travel is to live life the way it was designed to be. The human spirit in all its forms was not meant to stay in just one place.
The best way to experience more about nature and yourself is to travel. “The world is a book, and those who do not travel read only a page.”: Saint Augustine
You never know which experience will give you the ultimate joy and during these travels, one might find what one is actually looking for.
10. Judge your success by what you had to give up in order to get it.
Nothing great can ever be achieved without having to do some sacrifices. Success holds a different meaning for different people, for some, it is money, for some it is fame and for some it is health but to judge success truly one must take into account the journey towards success.
Whether it be someone in the white house or some famous actor, they all had to give up a lot in order to get where they are today. And to completely enjoy the success, one must honor the sacrifices as well. Giving things up but never going down is the true secret of being successful.
